It’s only August, but Guillermo del Toro is already gearing up for Halloween. The iconic director of The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy walks us through his new, super spooky eight-episode collection of horror stories in the first-look trailer for his new Netflix anthology series, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.
The episodes will start rolling out on October 25 during the Netflix & Chills Halloween event. Two episodes will drop each day through Oct. 28, at which point all eight episodes will be available to stream.
“Cabinet of Curiosities is a show that I always wanted to make,” del Toro says in the first look trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, which you can watch above.
“In this anthology, we gave ownership of each of the episodes to the directors. Each of the episodes has a whole world. They present you with different delights — some are savory, some are sweet. You get a surprise from each of the bites. We wanted to create beautiful, practical creatures with all the artistry that goes into a great monster,” he adds. “With Cabinet of Curiosities, what I’m trying to say is, look — the world is beautiful and horrible at exactly the same time.”
The series is chock full of incredible actors, including Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, The Eric André Show‘s Eric André, The Punisher star Ben Barnes, Freaks and Geeks star Martin Starr, and Holes star Tim Blake Nelson, to name just a few. Notable directors of the episodes include Mandy director Panos Cosmatos, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, The Babadook director Jennifer Kent, and Narcos director Guillermo Navarro.
Del Toro created and executive produced the anthology series, and also serves as host of the episodes. The show is executive produced by J. Miles Dale (The Shape of Water; Sex/Life), who also serves as co-showrunner. Gary Ungar also executive produces, and Regina Corrado serves as co-executive producer.
“We set out to showcase the realities existing outside of our normal world: the anomalies and curiosities,” del Toro added in a statement, courtesy of Netflix. “We hand-picked and curated a group of stories and storytellers to deliver these tales, whether they come from outer space, supernatural lore, or simply within our minds. Just in time for Halloween, each of these eight tales is a fantastical peek inside the cabinet of delights existing underneath the reality we live in.”
